When the Cuckoo Calls is based on the life of Paula Richter, a Polish woman born in 1925 in Lwów, Poland (now L’viv, Ukraine). After German troops assumed control of her town, she was captured twice, escaping both times, before finding her place with US forces and the liberation of Europe in 1945. It was then that she met her husband, Anthony Kazmierski, when his tank battalion came upon her camp in Austria. They moved to Rochester, New York where they raised two children. Paula died from Alzheimer’s disease on February 21, 2014 at the age of eighty-eight.

When the Cuckoo Calls eBook Colin Flahive Reviews

I just finished Colin Flahive's new book about his Grandmother. A piece of history narrated through the eyes and feelings of a girl, and then woman, who personally lived and survived that piece of history. The book is as short as intense and tough... if you have a few hours, it's worth downloading and going through it! You might find yourself holding your breath or dealing with a deep sadness every now and then while reading, and/or you might be pushed to go to your own grandparents with the curiosity of knowing if they lived any of that, or if any of their friends did...
I believe this book was written in a special way I had not encountered in other accounts of Jewish survival in World War II. Bouncing back and forth between modern times and the war era created a style that helped the reader understand this woman's situation.
Colin Flahive’s writing is effective, compelling and draws the reader into the conflicted emotions of a deeply loving mother and grandmother, even great grandmother as she ages and, through flashbacks and the sometimes confused memories of an aging person, tells her story of the World War II horrors inflicted upon Poles and Polish Jews in particular, while also sharing her experience and memory of happy times—both in childhood and after escaping to the US and raising a family she obviously loved dearly and is deeply devoted to.

Colin uses the titular cuckoo clock very effectively as a foil, signaling her shift in both real and imagined time. It serves almost as soft punctuation or a gentle marker guiding us through the veil of her memories and reminding us of how her decision to try to conceal the ugliness of times past from her children must also have proven also as relentless as the ticking of the clock, guarding her emotions but knowing also that there would certainly come a time when the clock would chime.

The ending of the book came as a truly powerful surprise and is beautifully conceived and written. I WILL not spoil your pleasure by even hinting at how it is managed.
